The next day, the group goes to watch a Kabuki play. In the theater the family sits in the middle seats. As they wait for the rest of the audience, the crowd that is there
chatters lightly to pass the time. Eventually, the lighting in the theater grows dim and the curtain on the stage
rustles as it suddenly pulls open to reveal the first scene of the play. A taiko drum is
struck multiple times and music begins to play while the actors of the first scene walk
slowly and delicately onto the stage, which is set up to be a shrine.

In the middle of the play, one character is a
samurai being cornered by two other soldiers, commanded by the antagonist whose face is covered in blue makeup. The antagonist clearly hates the samurai and wishes to kill him. While
fighting with swords, the samurai
wheezes. He is outnumbered and outmatched, and it’s obvious that he will lose and be killed unless he receives some sort of help.

A new character, the protagonist, appears on stage wearing extravagant facial makeup featuring red lines, and
abruptly turns to face the audience and says “Shibaraku!” to halt the fighting. When he does so, he dramatically poses or “cuts a mie” while
stamping his feet to show that what he is about to do is important.
