February 14, 2006:  Military Funeral Protests Banned

In response to anti-gay protests at military funerals by members of the Westboro Baptist Church (see “2005-2006: Protesters at Military Funerals”), Indiana legislators passed into law a bill that “makes disorderly conduct at a funeral a Class D felony and mandates a 500 foot setback from the edge of the grave for any protest” (“Governor signs,” 2006). Others states in which the Westboro Baptist Church has protested are deliberated upon similar legislation.
