1830:  Indian Removal Act

The Indian Removal Act officially allowed the U.S. President to extinguish any legal claims that Native Americans held to their lands.  Many were forcibly removed to new lands in the west.  Andrew Jackson implemented this policy because he believed that Native Americans could not exist as an independent population within a larger population.
