February 1896:  Couple Arrested for Breaking Miscegenation Law

Hallie Shafer, a Caucasian woman, and James Walker, an African American man, were arrested for violating the miscegenation law.  This crime was a felony that carried a penalty of 10 years in prison and a fine ranging from $100 to $1,000.
