1925:  D. C. Stephenson Rapes and Kills Madge Oberholtzer

D. C. Stephenson was introduced to a statehouse secretary named Madge Oberholtzer when he attended an inaugural ball for Governor Ed Jackson.  Oberholtzer was later abducted by Stephenson and some of his men from her home in Indianapolis.  They took her by train to Hammond, Indiana.  During the trip, Oberholtzer was repeatedly raped and beaten by a drunken Stephenson.  In Hammond, she unsuccessfully attempted suicide by swallowing poison.  Stephenson took her back to Indianapolis.  Oberholtzer died a month later either from the effects of the poison or the bite marks from Stephenson.  Stephenson’s trial took place in Noblesville.  He was convicted and sent to the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City for 31 years.  He was released from prison in 1956.
