Why is the Muncie Memory Spiral a spiral?
Shell Spiral

The Muncie Memory Spiral is an educational, unique and beautiful park installation unlike anything else in our area and, indeed, in all of Indiana. Our history garden’s spiral shape is fundamental to its pleasing aesthetic and meaning. Many and various cultures across the globe and the centuries have used the spiral to illustrate movement, the passage of time, change and growth -- the very components of history. Many natural forms are spirals, like sea shells or the centers of sunflowers. Humans instinctively find the shape pleasing and inspirational. As well we should, since the DNA of every individual is also a spiral. The pictures on this sign show just a few examples of spirals that can be found throughout our world.

The Spiral Landscaping Shell Spiral

Community Enhancement Projects (CEP) takes pride in its many efforts to provide attractive landscaping for public projects around our city. The Muncie Memory Spiral is no different. The appearance of the landscape inside the spiral will constantly change over the spring, summer, and fall months as the plantings consist of a variety of flowers, shrubs, and bushes that bloom at different times of the year. In addition, while the majority of the landscaping consists of contemporary plants, those closest to and around the center of the spiral are all indigenous varieties which were present when Native Americans were occupants of the land we now inhabit.
