Qualitative Interview Analysis

The Project members utilized insights gathered from participant observations and interviews, along with coding, to emphasize key aspirations of the Ball State students and Muncie residents concerning the Village Revitalization. The use of coding all the qaulative data collected helped our team to clearly articulate the community’s vision for the area’s future.

Doubts/Concerns

Our analysis revealed that interviewees expressed doubts and fears regarding the Village Revitalization Project. These concerns ranged from the perception that the developer’s plans did not align with the community vision to the fear that no meaningful change would occur. We noted several significant insights, particularly worries about potential increases in housing and food costs both within the village and in the surrounding area.

Some specific phrases and ideas from our qualitative interviews highlighted these doubts and fears. Common themes included concerns about gentrification, misalignment with the community’s vision, and ongoing worries about financial factors, such as hotel prices, food, shops, and parking.

Parking was a particularly significant issue for many interviewees. There was a strong emphasis on the need for more parking overall, including free parking and improved parking infrastructure. Many felt that insufficient attention was given to this crucial detail, contributing to their skepticism about the Village Revitalization Project.

Additionally, another recurring theme in the interviews was the issue of excessive turnover of shops and restaurants or too many of one type of shop, lack of variety in what is being offered, and poor infrastructure maintenance. Interviewees pointed out problems such as inadequate parking conditions, uneven and broken sidewalks, and numerous potholes.

Hopes/Dreams

Our interviewees shared a wide range of hopes regarding the potential outcomes of this project upon its completion. Many anticipate the creation of new social spaces, increased job opportunities, and a more welcoming area for newcomers and permanent Muncie residents alike, aiming to expand The Village beyond the corner of West University Ave and Dill Street, where most of the activity currently takes place. There is a shared hope that this project will bring life to the entirety of The Village, not just that one corner.

While some expressed doubts and concerns about the Village Revitalization, others shared their aspirations for the community’s future. Common themes of hope emerged, including excitement about the arts center, establishing more social spaces for students, faculty, staff, and residents of Muncie, and the promise of additional job opportunities.

Interviewees highlighted the need for spaces catering to under-21 individuals and older demographics, making The Village more inclusive. As new shops and businesses arrive, they envision a more diverse crowd drawn to the area. Furthermore, respondents desired versatile spaces that encourage daytime activity, contributing to a vibrant community atmosphere beyond just nighttime entertainment.

A quote that encapsulates the hope surrounding the Village revitalization is: “Becoming a melting pot!”
