Project Overview

In the fall of 2022, we worked with Wes Del Elementary school to expand to a rural community and added the addition of Spanish students referred by Adam Ballart to come to read the Henry Gets Moving book in Spanish after the students read the book in English. This was the first time we were able to do this. Starting in the fall of 2022-spring of 2023, the computer science students and I have been meeting monthly on the development of the Henry Gets Moving.org website. The students have made a great deal of progress thus far, getting the website started, and working on the administrative side as well so it can be maintained once they graduate. The website includes both exercises and healthy recipes, a games tab, a way to track exercise and more. We have been asked to return to Pleasant View Elementary School in April of 2023. We worked with these now first grade students when they were in Kindergarten but due to the outside temperatures that day, we focused more on the exercise component, while this time we will focus more on the nutrition piece. This will be the first time returning to a school one year later so we look forward to see what they retained and we can expand on their knowledge and further their experience with the importance of healthy eating and getting active and how it can benefit them for years to come. We will be working with over 200 students which will be a great opportunity for BSU Exercise Science students. We still need nutrition faculty to get on board, so there is still more work to be done in this area of the project.

Students: Francesca Fontus, Bailey Turner, Trinity Mitchell and all students enrolled in the EXSC 301 classes ( 2 sections) this semester. Along with, the three Computer Science students working on the website (originally started as an app), Melody Hammel, Kiri Woodruff, and Mars Williams.

Faculty Mentors: Nicole Koontz, Dr. Lan Lin, Adam Ballart
Community Partners: Wes Del Elementary School, Pleasant View Elementary School
