Project Overview

This immersive learning project breaks from a traditional siloed teacher education approach to establish a more coordinated and collaborative experience for prospective mathematics teachers. Specifically, this project seeks to coordinate MATH 393 (Math Department in CSH) and EDJH 385 (Educational Studies Department in Teachers College) in partnership with Northside Middle School within Muncie Community Schools. To this end, MATH 393 and EDJH 385 will be held at Northside; BSU students will work in paired (not 1-to-1) placements with experienced Northside mentor teachers to encourage collaboration and pedagogical development and reflection; and coursework will be designed to address authentic problems of practice in field experience help at Northside.The final product of this immersive learning experience is a detailed, research-based (e.g., Aguirre, Mayfield-Ingram, & Martin, 2013; NCTM, 2014; Smith & Sherin, 2019) unit plan including five middle school mathematics lessons. These lesson plans will be developed in collaboration between 2-3 BSU students and a mentor Northside Middle School math teacher. The lesson will draw upon core concepts discussed in MATH 393 and EDJH 385 and make use of the newly adopted Muncie Community Schools mathematics curricular resources (i.e., McGraw Hill Reveal Math). The lesson will be implemented by BSU students in Northside classrooms, be presented at an end-of-semester unit plan/partnership experience showcase, and be housed in a cloud-based folder for continued digital access among both BSU students and Northside teachers.
