Project Overview

This special section of English 103 is a unique immersive learning experience which continues through English 104 spring semester. Over the course of the year, our classes work closely with a community partner in the city of Muncie in an effort to bring positive change to our city. This is not just another English class. This is not just another core class or hoop to jump through to race to the end of a four-year degree. This is a course about writing and intellectuals. This is a course where students learn what a text is, who an intellectual is, who has power and how that power is communicated with text, and how to research/ discover and present what needs to be uncovered to make positive and impactful change with our community partners. So often students think of education as a means to an end: a way to earn a degree that will be the ticket to their dream job. But, in this class students learn to be more than just good students: they see how the skills are developing can be useful far beyond the boundaries of the university. They learn the ways that educational experiences can inform the way we think, and how grappling with difficult topics and thinking critically can help us be more publicly-engaged and more effective doers: better community citizens.
