Machine Made: The Rise of Industrial Work in Muncie

This section details the rise of industrial work in Muncie, Indiana. Muncie was dominated by manufacturing plants following the Gas Boom of the 1880s and 1890s and the city's industrial heyday continued through the beginning of the twentieth century. The rise of industrial work brought many changes to work in Muncie, from delegitimizing skilled labor to creating serious health risks for workers in factories. Workers responded by organizing unions and demanding better pay, safer working conditions, and more security. Mechanized factories changed Muncie in ways that are still felt to this day.
