What is it?

The magazine “Querer es Poder'' has been created and published since 2016 by the Spanish course for heritage speakers under the direction of Dr. Chin-Sook Pak. The title translates to “To want is to be able to.” Ball State students of Hispanic heritage have shared what their story means to them and how their background has shaped who they are today.

The Goal

The goal of the magazine is to celebrate the diversity of Hispanic heritage. Students are given a platform to share their personal stories and ideas for the future. The process of writing and editing for the magazine provides an opportunity for Hispanic students to maintain and strengthen their heritage language, while they reflect on and showcase their personal history. Through the wealth of these stories and thoughts about the past, present and future, they offer an inspiration and encouragement to those who are both new and familiar to the experiences of heritage students in the nation.

La comida nos une ("Food unites us.")

This year, the theme of “Querer es Poder” is food from Hispanic cultures. A common thread through the various articles is the relationships that were built and strengthened because of food. The magazine is filled with heartwarming and heartbreaking personal stories of family, poverty, immigration, change, assimilation, and so much more. The heritage class of the Fall 2022 semester is proud to present the public with a vulnerably beautiful snippet of their lives.
