Using Research to Understand Work-Related Stressors & Positive Work-Related Experiences of Noblesville Firefighters

AG5I1126.jpg

Although being a firefighter is a rewarding occupation, it can also be stressful. Unfortunately, research has found the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the daily stressors of first-line responders. The primary goal of this project was to provide students a real-world opportunity to implement research and critical thinking skills to help the Noblesville Fire Department (NFD) identify daily workplace stressors and resources that may have implications for firefighter well-being. To meet this goal, students conducted focus groups with firefighters to determine possible stressors and resources, and then used this information to (1) develop, collect, and analyze survey data from NFD firefighters, (2) consult with experts on best practices for mental health resources in fire departments; and (3) utilize both focus groups and surveys of young adults to help understand the high attrition rates among job applicants during their recent hiring process. Students will present their findings and possible resources/solutions to NFD at the end of the semester.
