The Evolution of Getting a Living in Middletown

Domestic Service for White Women

There was a steady decline in the number of white women holding domestic occupations. White women were focused on getting out of the house for work, especially as the increased presence of technology took much of the work previously done by housewives outside of the home. It became cheaper to buy mass-produced things rather than make them, so we see a number of women leaving domestic occupations in search of other work.
