Conservation Tales Immersive Learning Project

ConservationTalesGroup.jpg

Conservation Tales is an interdisciplinary team of students and faculty who work with a variety of external partners to create children's books about wildlife conservation and authentic science practices. In 2021, our external partners include the Ball State Biology Fisheries Research lab, the BSU Field Station and Environmental Education Center, and the Indianapolis Zoo.

The books produced in Spring 2021 feature Monarch Butterflies and Invasive Carp, and will join 13 previous volumes in the project's catalog. Each book presents two important messages for children - "Everyone can protect wildlife," and "Anyone can be a scientist."

Students on the team include animation and drawing majors, visual communications students, science educators, and photographers. The team shadows and interviews scientists who study a key species, and develops a story about a child who learns about the animals, the scientists, and conservation actions the readers can do at home.

Characters reflect a diverse group of scientists and children, and the books include inquiry learning activities ideal for schools, informal education and home learning.

Putting Downtown Muncie on the Map: Cartography for Businesses, Arts and History

ron drawing.jpg

GEOG434 (Maps, Environment, and Society) is an immersive learning class offered in the spring semester of 2021 that aimed to give support to the local businesses and cultural organizations and institutions in Downtown Muncie in their effort to promote economic activities, inform about downtown and attract people to the area. Students from the Geography Program and neighboring fields applied their cartographic skills and GIS knowledge to create interactive and visually attractive maps that invited residents and tourists to visit and recognize Downtown Muncie as a valuable place for shopping, leisure and entertainment. Under the guidance of Professor Dr. Jörn Seemann from the Department of Geography, a group of 21 students worked together with local partner institutions and associations such as DWNTWN Muncie and Muncie Arts & Culture Council to discuss and develop cartographic and other visual material (e.g. paper maps and interactive online maps) that can be used to advertise the Downtown businesses and highlight the qualities and attractions in this area.

CS4MS+

Partnering with local schools, the Computer Science for Muncie (and Surrounding) Schools (CS4MS+) project team researched, developed, curated, and delivered instructional resources which incorporate Computer Science (CS) into educational offerings, with a focus on the Indiana CS academic standards, and worked to advance teachers’ understanding of CS and/or interacted with their students as a teaching assistant. Although CS student focused, an interdisciplinary project team was sought, with another project focus being to expose underrepresented minorities and females to CS. When Indiana introduced CS into their academic standatrds, CS4MS+ was created to support local teachers in this endeavor.
