Project Overview

In this course, students were tasked with creating a sustainable addictions coalition that could assist with the community capacity building activities of the Addictions Coalition of Delaware County.  To facilitate the development of the student coalition, participating students were trained to utilize SAMHSA's Strategic Prevention Framework for substance misuse and community organization, and were provided instruction through an evidence-based teaching pedagogy called Team-Based Learning.  As part of their work, students organized and facilitated several environmental strategies to prevent substance misuse including a community clean-up day, a campus drug take-back day, a post-card prevention campaign, and a drug and alcohol-free student social network. Additionally, students also assisted with the Fix Exhibit at Minnetrista and the Avondale neighborhood’s Trunk or Treat community event. Finally, in completing this course, the participating students will have met the educational requirements necessary to become the 1st-ever ICAADA-certified substance use prevention specialist associates (CPS-A) in the state of Indiana.
