"Welcome to Muncie" Promotional Video
1media/Middletown from 1988 video.png2022-12-11T14:36:08+00:00Anonymous311plain2023-02-01T16:46:56+00:00Jim Connolly46c7b502c79bde22331f06c832c764e9eca6a071The loss of traditional blue-collar, unionized, industrial employment in Muncie was in the cards some 20 years before the closing of BorgWarner and Muncie Chevrolet. Consider this 1988 promotional video that attempts to lure homeowners to our corner of Indiana. Interestingly, the majority of businesses mentioned in the video would be closed by the new millennium. Beyond this obvious comment on the force and timing of deindustrialization -- the mere fact that a real- estate promotional video was necessary to sell homes in 1988 demonstrates that the troubles of deindustrialization were not on some distant horizon. Rather, the rust had already begun to set in on Muncie's industrial core.
