Indianapolis International Airport

The Indianapolis International Airport is one of the most well-respected international airports in the United States owned and operated by the Indianapolis Air Authority, a municipal corporation established in 1962. The Indianapolis International Airport has won multiple awards for the outstanding experience they curate for their guests. For example, they were named the Best Airport in North America by Airports Council International for the eighth consecutive year in 2020.

This company operates two main facilities including the terminal and the ground transportation center. The terminal allows for 44 domestic gates and two international gates with room for expansion as well for future airlines. The ground transportation center is the operation center for parking, shuttle buses, courtesy vehicles, and other transportation services. The main parking garage has five levels.

The airport partners with a multitude of airlines, both passenger and cargo. The current passenger airlines at the airport are Air Canada Express, Alaska Airlines, Allegiant Air, American Airlines, American Eagle, Contour Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Delta Connection, Frontier Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Spirit Airlines, United Airlines, and United Express. The current cargo airlines are Cargolux, FedEx Express, and FedEx Feeder. Southwest Airlines is the largest airline that operates at the Indianapolis International Airport.

In 2020, the number of passengers has significantly dropped because of the Coronavirus pandemic. In September of 2019, the airport enplaned 367,579 passengers. In September of 2020, the airport boarded 142,135 passengers. This is a staggering 225,444 passenger disparity between the two samples. This circumstance has led to significant changes in how the airport operates. Creating a safe, comfortable, and intuitive experience for the guest in consideration of COVID has become a top priority for the Indianapolis International Airport. Guests’ confusion and concern will be addressed with operational changes, and these changes need to be properly communicated.
