Executive Summary

Unwind and Recharge with us at the Village Promenade. Self-care is the best care. We have decided to plan a relaxation and de-stress event for the medical students at Ball Memorial. We are partnering with Tonne Winery and giving away free bottles to every student. We have also reached out to a local yogi who has agreed to guide our guests in a relaxation and recharge session. If the students are not interested in yoga, we would also like to offer an essential oil table where they can smell the different scents and get to take two of their favorites home.

Some potential benefits of the event

❖ Relaxation for the medical students ❖ Advertisement for a local winery ❖ Advertisement for a local yoga instructor

Benefits of Yoga & Meditation

❖ Less Stress - Mindfulness decreases stress and stress causes many illnesses. ❖ Better Connection & Improved Relationships - Getting still and quiet and connecting with yourself helps you be more present and connect with others, thus improving your relationships. ❖ Improved Focus & Clarity - Meditation hones our ability to focus and to see more clearly. ❖ Reduced Brain Chatter - Stop the insanity! Do you really want such a busy, chattering mind? Meditation gives your mind a break and quiets the noise, thus creating more peace and calmness. ❖ Understanding of Unhealthy/Negative Emotions - Mental and emotional pain and anxiety are background noise that affects much of what we do and how we feel. Meditation helps us see and connect to what's causing it, thus taking back our control.

Benefits of Drinking Wine

❖ Rich source of antioxidants May help to lower bad cholesterol (LDL) levels May reduce the risk of heart diseases Can help to regulate blood sugar levels May reduce the risk of certain cancers Can help to keep memory sharp Can have positive effects on the digestive system

The Opportunity

It is time for these hardworking, life-changing, medical students to take and have a moment for themselves. Our team and I have created an event that gives these students a chance to relax and have fun. We want to stress the importance of mental health through the medical community in hopes to show that Muncie has events in place to support our students.

Details of Event

We plan to host the event on a Thursday evening after dinner time in April at the Village Promenade in the Warehouse. We will offer a complimentary yoga class, essential oils to take home, and a to-go bottle of wine. The wine is from Tonne Winery. We will provide Royerton red wine. We will purchase these oils from Amazon. There will be a variety of scents. To display the wine and oils we will use tables provided by the Village Promenade. We will also have tables and chairs provided by the Village Promenade for the students to sit and relax or socialize if not participating in Yoga. The yoga instructor will be providing all needed materials for the 45-minute class. She will also be bringing a portable speaker. We will have soft relaxing music playing for a relaxing vibe.

Description of Event

Unwind and Recharge with us at the Village Promenade. We are offering a certified yoga instructor to come and teach a yoga and meditation class, have message chairs for extra relaxation, and wine goodie bags that we’ll be giving out with some essential oils.

Imagine working 40+ hours per week, coming back home, and crashing on your bed. You have no time for friends, family, or even time to take care of yourself. IU’s seventeen medical students know all too well of this. According to Rush University, 30 percent of medical students suffer from depression or have symptoms of depression. Self-care is one of the most important things we can do as humans. Sadly, I do not think we all take the time to take care of ourselves. For the seventeen medical students who work 40+ hours, I can bet you if we asked when the last time they took a “self-care day,” they would laugh.

However, nearly all physicians (98%) believe self-care positively impacts mental health and 97 percent believe it has a positive impact on physical health. Further, about 9 in 10 physicians (96%) agree that self-care should be considered an essential part of overall health. When physicians do engage in self-care, 87 percent say it is to maintain or improve their physical health, 83 percent to reduce stress, and 82 percent to maintain or improve their mental health. These medical students deserve a break and we’re ready to give them that chance!

Acknowledgments

The great success of this event would not have been possible without the assistance of many people in our community. First off we would like to thank Dr. Webster and Dr. Sotiris Hji-Avgoustis for the opportunity to plan an event for the Ball State Medical students. We would also like to thank the Village Promenade for letting us use their facility. In addition, we would like to thank our lovely yoga instructor Susan Van Hoosen for teaching yoga during the event. Lastly, we could not have done the event without Tonne Winery and their tasty assortments of wine.
